Raveena got her name from a combination of her father's name Ravi and mother's name Veena.
Her first film Patthar ke phool (1991) was a flop, however she received the Filmfare Lux New Face Award. Her career was saved by the hit comedy Andaz Apna Apna. She made headlines with her fight with Karisma Kapoor, the other leading lady in the film. Her next film Mohra made her a superstar overnight. The hit song Tu cheez badi hai mast mast, had signified that Raveena was here to stay. Her on screen chemistry with Akshay Kumar was to turn into an off screen romance. Her rival Karisma Kapoor got her chucked out of many top films and she suffered a huge setback. Her films flopped at the box office, but her career was back on track with her hit film Ziddi, (1997). She then began to do films which ganered critical acclaim rather than box office success. Films like Shool (1999), Bulandi (2000) and Aks (2000) won her huge acclaim. She won the Filmfare Special Performance Award for Aks. However her best performance was in the film Daman: A Victim of Marital Violence (2001), where she played a wife of an abusive husband. Her years in the industry paid off when she won the National Film Award for Best Actress.
